Ophthalmology

 

A field of medicine dealing with the (anatomy, physiology) diseases of the eyeball and orbit tissues surrounding the eye. Ophthalmologists evaluate and treat various eye conditions. They also perform eye surgeries for adult and paediatric patients.

Common eye conditions

Glaucoma: optic nerve damage, which leads to blindness.

Cataract: Clouding of the natural lens inside the eye.

Pterygium: a fleshy growth on the eye surface, often due to hazardous UV rays from the sun.

Allergic eye disease: commonly affects younger patients, and adults to lesser extent.

Ocular inflammation: inflammation commonly due to inflammation elsewhere in the body (systemic inflammation)

Eye trauma: blunt trauma e.g. fist punch or penetrating trauma (e.g. stab)
